Before you use any solar array calculator, you need three numbers: your daily energy consumption, your available sun hours, and your battery's usable capacity.

Step 1 — Run Your Off-Grid Power Audit

An off-grid power audit is a complete list of every electrical device in your RV, its wattage, and how many hours per day you use it.

Step 2 — Determine Your Battery Bank Capacity

Divide your daily Wh requirement by your battery voltage (typically 12V) to get required amp-hours.

Step 3 — Calculate Panel Wattage

Panel Wattage = Daily Wh ÷ Peak Sun Hours ÷ System Efficiency (0.85)

Step 4 — Size Your MPPT Controller

MPPT controller sizing: total panel watts divided by battery voltage, multiplied by 1.25 safety factor.
